Lotje shows the benefits of this way of warming up, and then asks Flores to stretch while always being responsive to the leg without rushing. She works him in a travers on a circle, riding every stride and determining the length and tempo of the strides. She demonstrates the canter pirouette, rewarding him by riding forward and stretching. Lammert Haanstra points out how when he gets heavy, Lotje waits for him to relax in front, and never pulls on the reins.
Lotje goes to the trot, pointing out that the rider has to be aware each step of the ride. She explains and demonstrates how she rides the passage and piaffe. An audience member questions how you know if you are working your horse beyond their ability. Lotje looks for how the horse is going- is he stiff or cranky or tired and needs to be loosened or take a walk break. A woman in the audience points out that lesser riders and horses may use gadgets and tricks to compensate for their lack of abilities. Lotje replies that having an appropriate horse for the rider is very important, and Mr. Haanstra talks about the responsibility of the trainer.
