Helen Langehanenberg rides Reliance in a masterful demonstration of the preparation work necessary for collection. The total running time of this two part video is 30:00.
This time Helen rides Reliance, an 8 year old gelding who is a solid S level horse. Helen first looks for relaxation as she warms up with stretching forward and downward and push from behind. Because he is so relaxed she can begin to add transitions within the trot. In the canter she looks for the stretching and contact with an uphill tendency. She shows a beautiful example of this stretch at the canter, and how well he stretches at the trot on a loose rein after this correct work. When she picks him up after a walk break, she notes it is important that he wants to move forward off her weight aid willingly. She first looks for him to be uphill in self carriage, and then plays with the canter stride. Her first exercise is to go from shoulder in to haunches in without losing the contact. The half pass to flying change is next.

Step by step she continues the canter work building up to the flying changes. With all the basics in properly in place, she goes on to work the fours and threes, but has a small mistake in the twos this early in the season. She waits for him to come back into rhythm and asks for the twos again. After a walk break they move on to the pirouettes, and all of her preparation work in the collection leads to a successful pirouette for an eight year old. Helen offers her training philosophy on what to do when there are mistakes, as well as the responsibility of the rider to listen to the horse. Helen gives a great explanation of the balance of the horse at the trot that enables him to be more expressive. In the half pass she works on keeping the same rhythm and on the aids. She shows the beginning of the passage work by being able to change the size of the trot while keeping the activity. She stresses being aware of how much the horse can do at this point in his training, and not pushing him beyond that.
